Eastpointe Health & Fitness begins January Real Results Program.
On January 9th, Eastpointe Health & Fitness started the first Real Results, All-Inclusive Health Program of the year. This session runs for eight (8) weeks: from January 9th through March 4th
During the initial set up, each participant met individually with the facility Nutritionist and a Personal Trainer to complete a full health assessment including initial weights and measurements. Based on this assessment, each person is given an individual plan for both eating and exercise.
This session of Real Results has taken a more personal twist. The group is smaller than usual, allowing more individual attention to goals and the participants really get to know each other on a more personal level. Part of what makes the program successful is the ongoing support given in the group meetings each week.
So what is in store for participants over the next several weeks? Each week the group meets on Mondays to discuss a different nutrition/exercise topic, share ideas and provide updates on progress. They have been following the exercise programs that were designed for them and checking in each time they enter the gym to track workouts. In addition they attend a group workout on Saturdays. If you would like to keep track of the group’s progress you can do so via the Nutrition Blog. You can see status updates from the program administrator as well as from participants.
It is never too late to begin!
Just because you missed the start of the session does not mean you have to wait for the next session to begin. Individual nutrition plans are available now and can set the foundation for the next program in April. Interested? Want to get started? Register for your free consultation by completing the form on our Nutrition page or giving us a call. How to Keep those Resolutions!
New Years Resolutions...we have all made them and we have all experienced the strong start and the weak finish effect! Weight loss and exercise are among the top contenders for resolutions.
According to a finding published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, approximately 50% of the population make resolutions each year. So what accounts for the high failure rate? People make resolutions to motivate themselves but in reality they may not be ready to change their habits. Another reason, says Dr. Avya Sharma of the Canadian Obesity Network, is that people set unrealistic goals and expectations. Key to making resolutions work is changing your behaviors as well as your thinking.
If your New Year's resolution involves healthy eating and exercise habits, joining Real Results is a perfect first step! This program provides key steps proven to help you achieve success with a resolution.
- Providing focus
- Setting realistic goals
- Helping you integrate your resolutions into your lifestyle
- Creating a set of small achievable steps
- Providing accountability and group support
- Celebrating your successes each week to keep you motivated and on track
- Being mindful of your current state - becoming physically, emotionally and mentally aware
- Teaching you how to correctly handle a slip up
Make 2012 the year that you achieve your fitness goals! Join the Next Real Results, All-Inclusive Health Program scheduled to begin on January 9th, and finishes on March 4th.
We provide all participants with an integrated health and fitness approach that focuses on the entire person.

On September 28th, 13 (thirteen) members began a journey toward health by joining Eastpointe Health & Fitness’ All-Inclusive Health Program. The participants completed their final assessments this week and the results are in!
Each participant worked very hard to make improvements to their exercise and nutrition habits. Trainers worked with them in several teams where they received the benefits of semi-private personal training. In addition participants followed their individual customized programs designed by the training team. They attended ongoing nutritional discussion sessions, weekly motivational meetings and lectures all designed to help each individual achieve personal goals and lifestyle changes.
The biggest loser for total pounds, inches lost as well as the largest drop in body fat was Cass Ferrigno. Holly Nixon was the runner up for total pounds lost and Chris O’Neil was the runner up for total inches lost.

It is hard to believe that we are already into our third week of the Fall Real Results program! If you have made the commitment and are really following the guidelines...congratulations! If you are not seeing results yet we need to step up your game.
We have had mediocre attendance at the group meetings on Wednesday evenings thus far. I do understand that things come up but please try and attend. We WANT you to get your results and get your money's worth from the program. We want you to be successful!! We have a very talkative group and they are asking some great questions during the meetings. Also, as Paul mentioned in our kickoff meeting, participation at the meetings = results. Our winners are always the people that are present and accounted for!
This week is one of my favorite topics - How Your Mind Affects Your Health. This is the often overlooked component of weight loss and health. Getting your head in the game is as important (if not more so) than getting your body in motion. Join us to learn:
• Techniques to conquer old habits
• How to draw on your inner resources to achieve success
• The importance of positive thinking
We will also discuss ways to JUMPSTART your program. If you are following all of my recommendations and are tracking your food and still not seeing the results you want, follow these steps. Remember that results do not always appear right away on the scale. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED; your body works in amazing ways and your new habits may be changing your body fat numbers and/or your measurements without you even knowing.
You should be getting into the club at least 3 times during the week! We would prefer more... but we have to start there. If you average 350-500 calories burned per exercise session...you need 7 workouts to burn off 1 pound. Get moving!
Only 5 weeks left until Thanksgiving! Will your family and friends compliment you at the holiday dinner on how AMAZING you look???? Only you can make it happen!

The Center for Disease Control reports that two (2) out of three (3) Americans are overweight. This is an eye opening statistic and one that is reinforced daily while you are out and about people watching. Everywhere you go you see the unhealthy physical state of our population.
What is even more startling is that even though six (6) out of ten (10) people WANT to lose weight, only three (3) out of ten (10) are actually trying! Why are ½ the people not even trying? Have they given up hope? Do they not care any longer? Or is it that they have tried too many times and failed to succeed? This last question most likely weighs the heaviest on people’s decision to “drop out.”
In my business I meet with many different clients, day in and day out, from all different walks of life, various ages, and a multitude of goals. Some start out especially strong and fall fast…others are like the turtle who ultimately wins the race. They are slow, steady and determined. I have often tried to figure out what it is that makes people successful? If I had that single answer I could save people a lot of time and effort. In the first meeting if I determined that they “didn’t have what it takes” I could send them away saying “don’t waste your time and effort, you are not ready.”
Unfortunately, you know as well as I do, there is no single answer that ensures success. Much of what I see in terms of achievement depends upon the support they are receiving, the priority of the commitment in their lives and what else is “running interference” in their lives. If the stars are all aligned…it works!
I thought it would be interesting to get a perspective from people that are currently “doing what it takes” and find out what is presently making them successful verses what has tripped them up in the past. What makes this time different?
For Jennifer, who is down over 30 pounds, got started almost 2 years ago in the Real Results Program. This was what got her kick-started. Being accountable to the trainers and nutritionist at the club made a big difference. The most critical factor this time has been having the right people in place to support her. “It is important to have people that you can communicate well with, that support your goals and push you in the right direction. I have found that here at Eastpointe Health & Fitness,” says Jennifer. In fact, social support has been proven to be critical for weight loss. In addition, personal training has been a big factor for Jennifer. She knows that she CAN do it on her own, but can not depend on herself to “keep the appointment with myself.” “If I know I have someone there waiting for me and a certain sense of accountability, it makes a big difference.”
Joyce has lost over 40 pounds to date. She was working on her own and trying her best NOT to depend on other people. Much to her dismay, despite her intensive workout scheduled, she continued to gain weight. Joyce decided that she needed the accountability. She had been watching other people in the gym losing weight and being successful. Joyce thought that the individual approach with a personalized nutrition plan would work best for her. Through her experiences in the past she also knew that she needed continual follow up. She chose to do weekly meetings to keep her on track. The difference this time for Joyce was the individual accountability. “When someone is confronting you face-to-face there are only so many times that you can make up excuses!” Joyce said. An important lesson that she learned was how to be honest with herself regarding her food choices. She noticed that she was eating a lot of foods that were high in calories and not really paying attention to the quantities. I recommended she weigh her food for one week to get a better idea of how much she was consuming. Joyce realizes that this is just the beginning. Now she has to maintain her achievements! With the help of our nutrition services she feels that she became more educated and better prepared to confront the causes of her weight gain.
There are many stories and countless factors that have helped to change people’s lives for the better. The bottom line is finding what works for you! Based on my experiences, here are my top picks for what makes people successful.
1) Personalizing Your Plan - Every person is different. Your plan needs to work for you. It is not “a diet” “a program” or “a designated timeframe.” It is ongoing – this is your life stop waiting for the right time – it will NEVER come. You need to be able to handle your LIFE within your plan!
2) Understanding & listening to your body - Effectively handling your stress, sleeping properly and take care of yourself and your basic needs. All these sound simply, but do you really do them? Take a good, hard look at your habits.
3) Quality & Consistency of Your Intake - The better the quality of your intake (more fruits/veggies/whole grains) the more likely you will maintain. Eat Breakfast, don’t skip meals, and be consistent! Don’t eat salad all week and go off the deep end on the weekend
4) Move! - Exercise, exercise, exercise. Decrease TV viewing/computer time and maintain a physically active lifestyle
5) Face –to-face accountability – Who do you answer to? Weigh in, monitor your eating, enlist a friend, family member or a professional

One of the first things that I tell my Real Results participants at the Kickoff session is to get more sleep. They look at me with a puzzled expression. The amount of sleep (or lack thereof) is directly associated with weight gain in many studies. Our busy lifestyles today often lead to shorter rest periods; affecting our hunger hormones, cortisol levels...and weight. Are you getting enough rest to support a healthy body? Maybe the answer to your weight loss has been right on your favorite pillow all along!
Here is a link to an interesting article on the topic.

The seventeen (17) members that joined the Real Results program on April 4th have been very busy improving their lifestyles and general health.
The goals of this Spring group varied greatly and ranged from improving overall health and stamina to increasing energy levels to losing weight. Each participant was given the personal attention to uncover the internal desires motivating them to change, and then throughout the program they have been coached toward successfully achieving their objectives.
Tracking workouts is a big indicator of progress; our top workout tracker thus far has logged in a total of 39 workouts over the 7 weeks!!
Instead of telling you what they have been up to, we asked THEM to tell us in their own words.
As they approach the final week of the program here are some reactions:
o “I am so motivated by all of the support offered to the group by the staff!”
o “I am motivated by the fact that my clothes are fitting better.”
o “ I have really enjoyed working out with the trainers during the group sessions! It helps to keep me motivated to make the time to workout.”
o “I have learned that eating right AND exercising are both critical to successful weight loss.”
o “I have more energy and less pain in my back.”
So what is in store for participants next? Final evaluations will be scheduled next week to track their loss of weight, inches and body fat. Winners of the program will be announced in early June.
It is never too late to begin!Just because you missed the start of the Spring session does not mean you have to wait for the next session to begin. Individual nutrition plans are available now and can set the foundation for the next program in September. Interested? Want to get started? Then this week's lecture topic can not be missed!
With today's busy lifestyles all of us are affected; Lack of sleep, high stress levels and eating on the run all lead to hormone imbalances, food cravings and nutritionally deficient diets. In this week's lecture we will take a hard look at some great ideas that can help keep you on track...REGARDLESS OF YOUR BUSY LIFE! Yes, there are answers and things you can do to help support your body.
Prior to coming give some thought to your lifestyle.
• Are you letting your lifestyle get in the way of your health goals?
• What are your change priorities?
• What improvements have you made thus far?
• What more can you do?
Remember, I warned you that there was going to be a lot of ongoing mental work that needs to be done to help you accomplish your goals. We are in week 4 of the program, HALFWAY THROUGH, what mental work have you done thus far? Are you still floundering in your commitment? Are you still letting those barriers get in your way this time around?
See you all on Wednesday evening at 7:30! (7pm weigh ins)

Sports Drinks...they are marketed non-stop; you see everyone drinking them, even when they are NOT exercising. Predominately made up of quickly absorbable carbohydrates in the form of sugar, sports drinks are advertised to "help you maintain your energy" and "keep you hydrated" during activities. If you are a frequent consumer of sports drinks it may be time to re-think your approach to hydration! Read on and decide for yourself.
Are Sports Drinks Healthy or Necessary?
