Prevent Injury and Get Fit Smarter By Taking The Functional Movement Screen at Eastpointe Health & Fitness

By Brian Bott, Certified Personal Trainer

Much to the surprise of most gym goers and fitness professionals alike, the most common reason for failure of a weight loss or exercise program is injury. Compounding this problem is the fact that the biggest predictor of injury is…you guessed it… a previous injury! If you ask a room full of people if they’ve ever been injured I would guarantee that more people than not will answer yes to that question.

So what are we doing wrong that’s causing such a high level of injury in the population of people we would assume to be in the best shape? What’s happening to these people that never had any pain before but suddenly when they make an attempt to do a positive thing by becoming active they end up hurt?

  Young Athlete Group Training Program

This program is for young athletes between the ages of 12 to 15. This is a great age to start introducing proper training habits, teaching proper form, and developing a great foundation to build upon as they enter high school and higher level sports. Each athlete will be individually screened and assessed beforehand to check for any strength or mobility imbalances that may be likely to cause injury. Based on this screen, proper corrective exercise and drills will be assigned to them. Program starts in early to mid-July. Visit our Young Athlete Group Training page for more information.

  College Prep Athletic Workshop

A 6-week program for high school athletes and recent grads that focuses on strength and athletic conditioning. Instruction will be in a small semi private setting to ensure proper form is learned. In this workshop you will learn which exercises and drills are the best for developing strength, size and speed specific to your sport and position. Each athlete will go through a screening process before the workshop to check for any muscle imbalances or deficits in joint mobility or stability so that proper corrective exercise can be prescribed to help the athlete's body perform more efficiently.   EPH&F Beach Volleyball Club

Hello Eastpointe Beach Volleyball Players,

We just had our second successful weekend of play at the Highlands Recreational Center located on Snug Harbor Lane in Highlands off of Bay Ave. We are playing 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 and 6v6 beach volleyball every Sunday afternoon from 3-5pm. Please come out and join us this summer in tons of FUN, SUN and SAND! Let us know if anyone wants to stay later than 5pm or start before 3pm… or if anyone wants to play one day/ night during the week? We would like to add one weekday evening for play as well if we get enough people that are interested. Our first Sunday we played from 3-8pm! We had a great turnout and it was a lot of fun for all!

Looking forward to a fun filled summer on the courts! Feel free to bring food, water, towel and non-alcoholic beverages as well as yourself this Sunday! Please see Lindsey or Mai at the gym if you would like to be added to the club email list or if you have any questions. Hope to see you all there!

Eastpointe Health & Fitness Makes Donation to the Ryan Andrew Kaiser Memorial Foundation

Eastpointe Health & Fitness once again sponsored Ryan’s Run last Saturday, and competed in the race with an EPH&F team. The race was a great success and a lot of fun for everyone.

Begun in 2003, Ryan’s Run is a major fundraising event for the Ryan Andrew Kaiser Memorial Foundation. Each year the 5K race sees hundreds of runners raise over $50,000 towards the foundation’s mission of assisting critically ill children in memory of the Kaisers son, Ryan, who died suddenly at the age of six. Eastpointe Health & Fitness, has participated each year as a sponsor of Ryan's Run through a financial donation as well as providing massage and chiropractic services on Race Day. “We appreciate EPH&F’s continuing support of Ryan’s Run and the Foundation,” said Andy Kaiser. “Besides their substantial financial donation, their giving of their time and expertise on race day is just phenomenal.” This year's race will be held Saturday, June 25 on the grounds of Mountain Hill School in Middletown.

  Shoulder Cuff Injuries

From our Physical Therapy Blog
By Mai Vu, Physical Therapist

The term Rotator Cuff is used to describe a group of 4 muscles: Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, and Subscapularis. The purpose of these muscles is to stabilize the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint when the arm is moving.

Classically, rotator cuff exercises involve shoulder rotation, where the elbow is held in one place while the hand moves through an arc.
